Alpine Peak - 9,871 feet

The view of Alpine Peak from the Iron Creek trail just past Alpine Lake.

Trip Report (June 9th, 2001):
Alpine Peak is a pyramid shaped mountain that acts as the backdrop of Apline Peak. The view from the top is stunning, with Mt. Regan close by, and Alpine and Sawtooth Lakes at your feet. Each way you look, offers a visual reward. The town of Stanley can be seen from the top.

I thought the climb up from Sawtooth Lake was challenging. I would rate it class 3. On the way down we slid down a long patch of snow, descending about 800 feet in 5 minutes.

This climb was epic and I highly recommend it!

Trip stats:
Time: 8 hours
Length: 12 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,500 feet
Class (difficulty): 3

Directions:
From Stanley, drive 4 miles north to the Iron Creek road. After a couple miles, the road reaches the developed Iron Creek transfer camp, where parking and information is available.

Route:
Take the trail past Alpine Lake and continue on to Sawtooth Lake (5 miles one-way). The trail is maintained and signed the entire distance. Once a Sawtooth Lake, head south on the trail that runs on the eastern side of the lake. At the south end of Sawtooth Lake, look for a creek coming down Alpine's west slopes. Hike up the hillside to a bench at the base of Alpine. From here, hike up the steep talus slopes to the top of Alpine.
