Trip Report

Each year our family does a family camping trip north of Ketchum along the Big Wood River. Each year we do a hiking trip. The first time, we went up Blackman Peak. Subsequent years saw a not so fun outing on Champion Peak in the White Clouds, then a nice hike up to Baker Lake last year.

This year I put the peak choice into the hands of the campers. Out of 5 choices, they picked The Cross, a small peak near Galena Summit.

It took some time to get 16 people organized, but we arrived at the trailhead and were hiking by 11am. The group ranged in age from 8 years old to 60+ years old.

The young ones took the lead on the steep road that got us to the base of the peak. We enjoyed the great weather, wild flowers, and views in each direction.

Eventually we took a break at the end of the two-track and began to follow a trail... straight up the mountain!

The top was great with gorgeous views and lots of family bonding. We even took up a new cross since the old cross the peak had been named for had long disappeared. The kids started that project the night before when they read in Tom's book that the old cross was gone.

It was great watching the kids get into the hike and experience. Everyone one of the kids thanked me for taking them on the hike. I couldn't get that many "thank you's" if I had given them each a $5 bill!

On the way down we discovered a tree covered in prayer flags, which kept us entertained. Some checked out the snotel, while the rest of the group headed up to a snow drift; which led to sliding, snow angels, snowball fights, and 15 more minutes of fun.

What a great day to be in the mountains!!!

Getting There

Drive to Galena Summit. The turnout is located 1/4 after the summit (on the Stanley side).

Hiking Directions

From the parking spot just below Galena Summit, follow the road heading north. About a 1/4 of a mile in, at the saddle marked BM 8701, continue on the main track (left). Eventually the road ends and a single track begins. Just after this point, angle over to the peak and climb up on use trails.
