Trip Report

Andy and I were out east on business. After a good time on Ohio's highpoint, we decided to visit New Jersey's highpoint while in that state.

New Jersey's state high point is aptly named "High Point". It is 1,803 feet tall and is a real mountain by USGS standards. As we would find out, it is a really nice area with thick forests, good views, and lakes. Lots of green every where you look!

The weather was very nice on the day we did the highpoint. We had a little trouble finding the actual park entrance for the highpoint itself (our GPS first took us to a different park entrance.

There are numerous ways to get to the top of High Point. You could hike the Appalachian Trail and take a side trail to the top. You could park at the park entrance and take the road to the top. Or you could park near the top and do the Monument Loop trail.

We were in a hurry, so we hiked to the top from the parking area. We then hiked the 223 feet to the top of the monument (not worth the views, but worth the exercise).

After exploring the monument and reading the history, we did a quick hike on the loop trail. However, having to get to New York City to catch a flight in a few hours, we were unable to get the whole loop done in time. I really wished we had more time as the loop trail seemed very nice.

Getting There

If coming in from the north, make your way to Port Jervis, NY. Follow Highway 23 toward Colesville, NJ. Turn left at the well signed park entrance.

If coming in from the south, make your way to Colesville, NJ. Follow Highway 23 towards Port Jervis, NY. Turn right to enter the park at the well signed entrance.
