Trip Report

My mother (Jackie) and father-in-law (Ken) had been hearing our stories of Zion and other hiking trips for years. They've always wanted to go, but Ken works in the farming industry, so spring and summers are out. We finally decided on a fall mini-vacation after the harvest. We chose Moab for our adventure.

Ken and Jackie are both fit, but neither have a lot of hiking experience. They told me to build the itenirary like I typically would if it was just my wife and me.

We arrived in Moab Saturday afternoon and before checking into our condo, immediately drove to Arches National Park.

After a few stops at the visitor center, Park Avenue observation point, Balanced Rock, etc... we finally got started on our first hike of any distance - Delicate Arch.

Delicate Arch is one of the busiest trails in America, but for good reason. The old Wolfe Ranch cabin, the petroglyphs, the arch, and the area around the arch are all spectacular! After hanging out an the arch for over an hour, we hiked back.

Our next stop was Sand Dune arch, which has a really cool trail - almost slot canyon-like. After that we hiked to Skyline Arch. Lastly, we finished driving to the end of the road, then stopped at each observation point on the way out.

Arches National Park was spectacular and Ken and Jackie were having a great time.

Hiking Directions

There is plenty of information on each hike mentioned. We used the book - Utah National Parks: Arches and Canyonlands Day Hikes by Anne Poe.
