Trip Report

I was in Las Vegas for a software conference. I had some spare time on Saturday, so I decided to bag some peaks off of Northshore Road in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. I had read about these peaks in "Rambles and Scrambles: A Peakbagging Guide to the Desert Southwest", a guidebook done by Courtney Purcell.

My goal was to take the road heading east; stop at each highpoint, hike to the top, back to the vehicle, and on to the next.

My first stop was Black Mesa. Black Mesa was relatively tame, except for finding a deceased desert tortoise.

The next stop was Blowing Peak. Blowing was unexceptional.

The next peak was After-Work Peak. So named because it was a quick hike you can do after work. This peak was steep with an alpine feel near the summit. For a 2000-foot peak, it had big drop-offs and impressive looking rock.

The next peak (Northshore Peak) on the list had the most gain of the day and the hardest climbing. Northshore Peak was also the highest peak of the day, had the most prominence, and was the most impressive looking from the road. The route was fun with a few class 3 walls that had to navigated. The views from the top were great.

I had assumed I could do 6 or 7 peaks. However, these peaks tough (steep and rocky). So when I got to the base of Glyph Point, I figured I had a few more in me. But the heat and yet another rugged peak made Glyph Point my final one.
